Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai announced a ton of details in his Smash Bros. Direct yesterday, while additionally giving a bit of news pertaining to the 3DS version of the game.
The 3DS version of the newest Smash Bros. game will be released in the summer of 2014 while the WiiU version will come out in the winter of 2014.
Not only will the 3DS version get an earlier release date, but it will also get an exclusive multiplayer mode called "Smash Run." Sakurai gave a few words to describe what the experience will be like.
"Smash Run is a battle game playable by up to four players where you search a dungeon like state for power-ups. The fighters begin on an expansive battlefield. The time limit is set to five minutes only. Within that brief time players will explore, fight enemies and obtain power-ups."
Sakurai further states that after exploring the battlefield, players will have to fight it out in the classic Smash Bros. format, utilizing all of their earned power-ups.
Some other 3DS only info announced dealt with the stages that will be in the game. The 3DS version will have courses from Ocarina of Time 3D, Fire Emblem Awakening, Nintendogs and stages from many other popular handheld titles.
One more technical tidbit that was discussed was how the game will run on the system. All playable character animations will be in 60 FPS, while assist trophies and Pokeballs will be in 30 FPS. This means the game will run incredibly smoothly considering the small hardware, making this a very impressive announcement.
