Smash Bros. cuts transformations, reason explained

Game website Game Rant released an article yesterday that gave fans the real reason that transformations will no longer be apart of the Super Smash Bros. franchise.

In the Smash Bros. direct a few months back, game director Masahiro Sakurai revealed that Sheik and Zero Suit Samus would no longer be add ons of other characters, but they wont be their own playable unit. He later showed off Charizard, who would also be a single character.

In an interview with Game Rant, Sakurai gave a few reasons as to why these former team characters would now be going solo. While most of the speculation has centered around the hardware of the 3DS, Sakurai gave a more gameplay oriented reason for the cutting of the feature.

“I mean [the limitations of the 3DS] definitely impacted the decision, but one of the other reasons is that we wanted people to really dive into playing one single character and more deeply.”

It is certainly no secret that the Nintendo 3DS lacks the memory of the WiiU. One is a home console while the other is a handheld. While it is possible that Sakurai truly wished to individualize his characters, it is hard not to be skeptical.

Since Sakurai has already announced that both versions of the new Super Smash Bros. will have the same rosters, many believe that the limitations of the 3DS are holding the WiiU version back.

Smash Bros. at its core is all about the roster. You want to play as all your favorite Nintendo characters and have as many options as possible. If the 3DS version really prevents the WiiU version of the game from reaching its full potential, there will certainly be some major backlash.
