Paramount Pictures and Qualcomm Incorporated announced Monday, Jan. 7 that Phoenix Trekkers will have an opportunity to unlock exclusive content and advanced real world game experiences with a “Star Trek Into Darkness” smartphone application launching at the end of this month.
In “Star Trek Into Darkness,” which will open Friday, May 17 at movie theaters throughout the Valley, Chris Pine reprises his role as Captain Kirk who, after the crew of the Enterprise finds an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization, leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one-man weapon of mass destruction.
According to statements made by Qualcomm Chairman and CEO Dr. Paul E. Jacobs during his keynote address at the International CES show in Las Vegas, the application will use Gimbal context awareness to enable users to access movie related materials simply by utilizing their real-life surroundings to auto-complete integrated missions by employing audio scan, geo-location recognition and image recognition functionality.
The first of several surprises will be revealed Sunday, Feb. 3 during the second quarter of the Super Bowl, when Paramount will premiere a tv-spot for the film with which users of the smartphone application can interact. Users who register for the application will also be automatically entered into a sweepstakes for a chance to win tickets to the motion picture’s premiere.
