Smart Holiday Gift: Give USPS Forever stamps before January price increase

Santa’s likely looking for last-minute stocking stuffers, and here’s a smart one. Why not pick up a few sheets, or even a couple of rolls, of Forever stamps from the United States Postal Service (USPS)? Postal fees are scheduled to go up in January 2014.

A first-class letter stamp currently costs 46 cents. In January, that price tag will rise to 49 cents. Forever stamps will carry over, making them a super investment right now.

USPS price changes are slated to take effect January 26, 2014. That means prompt holiday thank-you notes will go out before the price hike.

The increases, approved in September 2013 by the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC), include a bump in fees for postcards and parcels as well, are expected to generate some $2 billion in additional annual revenue. Overall, the raised prices amount to approximately 2.4 percent.

The accompanying slide show includes several examples of recently released USPS Forever stamps. Several themed options are available, making these particularly suitable for gift-giving, particularly as stamp sheets fit nicely inside holiday cards.

The USPS recently unveiled Harry Potter Forever stamps (see accompanying video).

Not all Forever stamps may be available at all US postal offices, as supplies may vary. Stamps may also be purchased directly from the USPS online.

Instead of a gift card, why not give a set of Forever stamps for Christmas?
