Small theatre outside of Boston does things outside of the box.

The Brattle Theatre, located in the heart of Harvard Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts, has advertised itself as "Boston's Unofficial Film School For Over 50 Years." By this they mean, they're not playing the latest Transformers movie, but rather a mix of classic films and recent independent releases.

Instead of playing a set list of movies every week, the theatre holds special events, screenings, and themed weeks. For example, at the end of January through the first week of February, the theatre is having a "(Some Of) The Best of 2011," replaying some popular indies from the last year such as Beginners, Midnight In Paris, and Drive.

The theatre itself differs in many ways from your average, run-of-the-mill movie theatre. Firstly, it doesn't really have a set schedule, meaning, the theatre opens 30 minutes before the first show of the day. Some days there are shows at 5:00, other days there are shows at noon. Since their hours vary, their schedule can be viewed on their website, or a current film schedule may be picked up at the lobby with the next two months of information as well as film descriptions.

Since the Brattle Theatre is a small, independent organization, they operate on ticket sales and donations to the Annual Fund. In addition to the array of films they show, they also have special double features, events and offer group rates. Recently, the Brattle Theatre held an event, with The Office's Mindy Kaling, (originally from the Cambridge,) in support of her first book.
