Small school makes a big difference

All Catholic schools get their students involved in volunteer work or other service projects throughout the year.  But one small Louisville school, Holy Family on Poplar Level Road, has made a very big difference for one Louisville social service agency, The Schuhmann Center, located at 730 E. Gray St.  The Schuhmann Center provides clothing, food, and other help to the poor and homeless of Louisville's inner city, and Holy Family has been helping them do that for over 20 years.

What began as a small group of volunteers helping to prepare the Center's former location to face the winter cold over two decades ago has become a devoted partnership between the center and the school.  With only 210 students, one might wonder what kind of impact Holy Family can have in helping Louisville's poor.  But their commitment to three annual projects for the Schuhmann Center at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter each year has made a big difference.  In last week's Record article, Schuhmann Center director Jim Nix was quoted as saying, "It's totally incredible what they have provided for our clients." 

Mother Theresa said, "We can not do great things.  We can only do small things with great love."  The students and faculty at Holy Family Catholic School have done small things with great love in a way that's had a very big impact.
