A small airplane, Piper PA-32R Lance, crashed into the Naperville Xsport Fitness building at 2780 Fitness Dr. The airplane hit one of the decorative towers on the corners of the building and came to rest inside the tower. The airplane, tail number N3402Q, had just departed Naper Aero Club Airport (LL10), a private field and was destined for Pittsburgh.
Witnesses stated the airplane appeared to not climb fast enough to avoid the building and struck the corner. There was no fire; however, patrons of XSport stated that gasoline did begin to leak through the ceiling into the building and staff quickly evacuated everyone from the building.
Fire crews were able to extricate both the pilot and passenger of the aircraft and bring them down via their ladder truck. Both the pilot and passenger were transported to Edward's Hospital with what were believed to be non-life threatening injuries. No information on their conditions or injuries was released per privacy regulations.
The pilot was a 66 year old male who was a member of the Naperville Aerostats Club.
