Small fire in Chicago subway system causes thick black smoke downtown; 19 sent to hospital

Sunday afternoon a fire in a Chicago subway has injured 19 people who were sent to the hospital, five were seriously injured. The Chicago Transit Authority said that the small subway fire has been extinguished and that it broke out along the Red Line tracks, just north of the downtown area.

The fire sent thick black smoke up through the grates along city streets in downtown Chicago. Ten ambulances responded to the fire.

A spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department, Richard Rosado said Sunday that 19 people complained of respiratory problems and were taken to hospitals, but none had life-threatening injuries. Rosado said that 5 people were listed in critical condition, 3 were in fair to serious condition, and 11 had minor injuries.

An investigation has been opened as to why the fire started in the first place.
