UPDATE 12/9 AT 4:10 PM EST: CLIFFY IS SAID TO BE ON THE EUTH LIST TONIGHT!
It is likely a safe assumption that those who have clicked on this article, would never surrender their dogs to a kill shelter; not after two weeks, not after two months, and especially not after 16 long years. Unfortunately, 16 year-old Cliffy's owners did just that when they left their faithful companion at the Brooklyn facility of Animal Care and Control of New York City (NYC ACC,) citing financial issues.
Cliffy's hair was so matted that he had to be shaved down before his intake photo (above) was taken. Underneath the mess, there was a skinny little guy, currently listed as a Chinese Crested mix, even though he looks more like a Maltese mix.
His intake notes say he is "very sweet," and according to his owners, "he is a loving dog, he listen (sic!) well, he do (sic!) not use bathroom in home." Cliffy is also said to ignore dogs and cats, to be friendly with both adults and children, to be fine left alone eight hours a day, and to be both house- and paper trained.
Despite his skinny condition, and a few minor - and mostly age-related - issue, like a slight ear infection, cataracts and dental disease, the medical staff concluded that Cliffy "is in extremely good condition for an animal of his age."
Because of his age, NYC ACC is looking to place Cliffy with one of their New Hope partner rescues. These groups need foster or adopters before they can pull animals from the shelter; if you can help Cliffy by providing either a temporary or permanent home to him, please, read about the process here.
