Small Dog Rescue of Minnesota focuses its efforts on the little guys - dogs weighing in at 20 pounds or less. Dogs of all breeds and mixes are welcome into their program.

Many folks believe that small dogs are easier to train, cost less where the vet is concerned and require less work than the big lugs do. As it turns out, that’s a big misconception. Because they are so adorable, these cuties tend to get away with more mischief than larger dogs might. This may lead to behavior issues down the road, actually making some small dogs harder to train and socialize for placing in forever homes.

The organization does not discriminate on any level. Dogs with behavior issues, chronic conditions, senior dogs and general stragglers who were turned down elsewhere are all welcome here. Often there is a waiting list for entry into the program, but virtually no dog is ever denied acceptance here. The only exception to this in over two years is a dog who was suffering from a severe chronic illness, and making the day trip to a new foster home here in Minnesota would likely have made the short time he had left very uncomfortable.

This group of rescuers prides itself on being a leader in the no-kill dog rescue movement. A revolutionary new approach to donation and volunteering is going on here. The hope is that with a more professional approach to the representation of the adoptees, the rate at which they are adopted will increase. Various professionals such as full-time photographers, web developers and graphic designers donate their services for creation of websites and marketing pieces. Local car dealerships donate the use of vans or other vehicles to assist in dog transports, and legal counsel is even part of the volunteer work in this program.

If you live in the Minneapolis area, as either an individual or business you can help. In addition to fostering and transport volunteer needs, the organization is currently looking for volunteers who specialize in professional video editing, grant writing, sewing or printing services. They are also looking for individuals to sit on the non-profit board of directors for the organization. Additional items always needed are medium-sized harnesses, postage and, of course, monetary donations.

If you are interested in helping in any way, visit the Small Dog Rescue of Minnesota website today and get started. The little guys will be waiting!
