I still say that these are the best times to start your own business, especially for those that have been dreaming it for so long. With the work force being slumpish for many months/years, start creating those ideas and making drafts that will virtually speak for themselves. Shake off the depression that can blind ones determination, while doing test runs on your new business ideas.
Ask a few trusted people what they think of your business ideas, and do they really think that certain items/products will be successful sales, or just flops waiting to happen. This is how you start targeting a specific audience for your products, while learning the needs of your future clients.
Make up a few samples and pass them out just to see the feedback from potential buyers, while listening to their likes as well as dislikes. Never take the attitude of "If one won't by it, I know people that will". You want everyone to purchase your products, so cost of products should also be a factor to consider, because consumers can make or break your business.
These are all the things that one should think about in these troubling times of the economy, so keep your head up and let's make success.
