SMACK for kids

You’re probably asking yourself, “What the heck is SMACK?”

SMACK, or Summer Musical Arts Camp for Kids, is a two week summer day camp for kids. It is given by Concord First Assembly Church of Concord, N.C. SMACK began as an idea of Pastor Jerry Skaggs, director of music and worship at Concord First Assembly. The lead director is Patricia McTigue, who not only directs, but acts as choreographer. Mrs. McTigue has a degree in marketing and was also a professional entertainer. During the two week camp children rehearse and learn the various aspects of musical plays. During camp children work on the set, props, and costume deign.

Campers must be entering first grade or are at least six years old up to high school seniors who aren’t above the age of eighteen to be eligible to participate. This year’s registration ended on May 2 and cast members will start camp on June 15th and finish on June 26th. There is a tuition fee of $275 for the camp but scholarships are available. Last year many children who would otherwise been unable to attend Smack, did so on scholarships.

Last year SMACK put on a production of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The play was a huge success. The main actors as well as supporting characters did a spectacular job. Raffle tickets, being hocked as “golden tickets” were sold for door prizes. Of course, concession items such as popcorn, sodas, and Wonka bars were available for purchase during the play. This year’s play is a presentation of the children’s classic, Alice in Wonderland.

Beginning in July, the church will also offer preschool SMACK. The age range for this camp is three to five years. There will be three different camps this year: Pirate and Princess Camp (two, one-week sessions), which will be offered the week of July 6 to July 10 and July 27-31; Cowboy and Cowgirl Camp, offered July 13 to July 17; and Veggie Tales Camp, offered July 20 to July 24. Preschool camps runs from 9 a.m. until noon each day and showcase on the Friday of each week. The tuition fees for these camps are $135 for one week, $250 for two weeks, and $350 for 3 weeks.

For more information regarding these camps you can email the SMACK staff at smack@smackinfo.com
