Slumdog Millionaire director’s next movie is about Aron Ralston’s Utah mountaineer story. Danny Boyle, the director of Slumdog Millionaire, who won an Academy Award for Best Director in 2009 said Monday that his next project will be about Aron Ralston’s real-life story of cutting off his own arm in order to survive.
In 2003, Aron Ralston was on a mountaineering trip near Moab, Utah when a boulder fell on his arm trapping him in a canyon. Ralston did not tell anyone where he was, and he assumed he would die there. He wrote his name on the canyon wall, made a video saying good-bye to his family, and made plans to die. He drank the last of his water, and began to drink his own urine to survive.
After being slightly delirious, he had the idea to cut off his arm and free himself. He was able to cut the soft tissue around the bone and then wedge his arm in such a way that he broke it off and freed himself from the boulder. His story of sheer will to survive became famous around the world.
The movie called 127 Hours will be filmed in Utah in March and April. Some filming will be shot in Bluejohn Canyon, where Aron Ralston's cut off his own arm to survive. James Franco from Spiderman is scheduled to star in the movie.
Ralston wrote a book, Between a Rock and a Hard Place about his experience which inspired the movie. To see an MSNBC video of Ralston speaking about his experience, click here.
