The Bret Harte Bullfrogs (Angels Camp, CA) 120+ mile trip to San Francisco was a successful one. Bret Harte took advantage of sluggish play by the Wallenberg Bulldogs (San Francisco, CA) to win 48-38 in a non-league game held at Washington High School of San Francisco.
Raoul Wallenberg High School and Bret Harte Union High School have enjoyed a fruitful relationship over the years. Coach Pat Mulligan has taken his Wallenberg Bulldogs boys basketball team on the 120+ mile trip to Angels Camp to participate in the annual Bret Harte Basketball Tournament for almost his entire tenure as varsity basketball coach at Wallenberg. In the past three years, the Bret Harte Bullfrogs have made a return trip to San Francisco to play Wallenberg in a non league game including their match up today.
The Bulldogs had not played a game since December 21st and the layoff showed. The Bulldogs have trouble handling the ball and making shots early as they fell behind 15-5 after the first quarter. Coach Mulligan got his troops to focus better in the second and early third quarters as the Bulldogs kept the deficit around 6 to 8 points throughout.
Seeing that the Bulldogs had gained some momentum, the Bullfrogs made a defensive adjustment by going to 1-2-2 trapping zone press midway through the third quarter. The press turned the tide as the Bulldog guards were forced into bad passes and backcourt violations. The Bullfrogs took advantage and pulled away for a double digit lead they would never relinquish.
With the win, The Bullfrogs improved to 3-6 overall. The Bulldogs dropped to 1-9 overall.
