SLR Gear tests Olympus 25mm f1.8 M.ZUIKO lens

SLR Gear, an offshoot website of the Imaging Resource, one of the web's most-trusted resources for all things digital photography, has just posted an in-depth review of the new Olympus 25mm f1.8M.ZUIKO lens, which was announced alongside the OM-D E-M10 at CES 2014 earlier this year and slots in as the latest member of the Olympus f1.8 prime lineup.

So, how does it do in practice? Short answer: very well.

Optically, the lens is really good. In terms of sharpness, the lens is good right from the get-go at f.8 in the center with the corners slightly lagging behind the center in the slightest (emphasis: slightest) amount. The lens does not sharpen much when stopped down, but performance does not to soften due to diffraction until around f16. Come f22 (minimum aperture), diffraction really starts to take a toll on the image. As for chromatic aberration, vignetting, and distortion, all are very well controlled and should not present any real problems in real-life shooting.

Mechanically, the lens uses metal and plastic construction and AF is via a focus by the Movie and Still Compatible (MSC) motor, which promises nearly silent AF so as to prevent the sound of a focus motor from creeping into movies. Focus is controlled by a focus-by-wire system, which means that there is no AF/MF switch as this function is controlled on the camera.

Overall conclusion: praise at the highest level, especially considering the low price point.
