One St. Louis Park athletic team has had success this winter and it's the boys nordic ski team, who qualified for the state meet by winning the Section 6 title Monday afternoon at Theodore Wirth Park in Minneapolis.
The Orioles clinched the crown with a score of 366 points. Minneapolis Southwest took second with 358, Armstrong was third with 353 and Edina 352.
Each skier participated in two races, the freestyle and classic. The two times were added together for total time.
Qualifying from St. Louis Park was Sean Cork, who placed fourth overall with a time of 30:47.8. Nick Sokolowski was seventh at 31:55.9. Placing eighth was Liam Schmelzle with a combined time of 32:17.6. Conrad Phelan also placed with a time of 33:47.8.
Other Oriole skiers were Jackson Sokolowski, Sam Olson and Ben Choing.
Zak Ketterson of Bloomington Jefferson had the meet's best overall time with 29:23.5. In second was Andrew Egger of Benilde-St. Margaret's with a state qualifying time of 30:12 and finishing third was Jon Delaney of Armstrong. His time was 30:32.9.
Congratulations to co-head coaches Doug Peterson and Diane Vezendy and their assistants David Lindberg and John Dyste on an outstanding season. They are the first school to advance to the state meet, which will be held February 13 at Giant's Ridge in Biwabik. If you plan on making the trip to the state meet, admission is free.
