A warm Thursday night in St. Louis Park heated up for the Oriole soccer teams as they opened up the regular season with a pair of victories over the Alexandria Cardinals.
In the girls game, Emily Hinz scored the game's lone goal with 14::05 left in regulation to a 1-0 win over the Cardinals.
The game was scoreless in the first half. , Hinz, one of five St. Louis Park sophomores, kicked a shot off the crossbar off the crossbar :41 into the second half. She fired a shot from the right side into the net with 14:05 left and that turned out to be the goal that gave the Orioles their first win in 2013.
In the boys game, four different players scored in the first half to lead the Orioles to a 4-1 win over Alexandria.
John Kinney began the scoring on a rebound, followed by a right side goal from Victor Alonso Ruiz Shimada. Nicholar Owens, one of the Oriole newcomers, drove through the center slot to put St. Louis Park ahead by three and Kinney assisted on the final goal when he passed Artis Ciriskis and he gave the Orioles a four goal halftime lead.
The only scoring in the half came from Alexandria's Kevin Roedel. That was the only time the Cardinals put the ball in the net as the Orioles held on for their first win of the season.
Both Oriole soccer teams return to action Saturday, August 24 at Hopkins. The boys game is at 11 AM, the girls at 1 PM.
