The Predators took their first lead of the with the benefit of two bad penalties by the Wild's two best defensive centers less than 30 seconds after the Wild scored the game's first goal.
Kyle Brodziak took an interference penalty 10 seconds after the Wild got on the board and 21 seconds later Mikko Koivu tripped the Predators defenseman while forechecking.
The Predators (1-2-0) turned the one-goal deficit into a one-goal lead 39 seconds apart. Filip Forsberg scored his first career NHL goal into the open net behind Niklas Backstrom off a rebound. Then Colin Wilson picked the top shelf on the blocker side from the face off circle with Backstrom back in the crease.
Former Wild forward Eric Nystrom was the beneficiary of a soft pass from Justin Fontaine that Keith Ballard was unable to handle. Ballard knocked Nystrom down to give him a penalty shot. Nystrom capitalized on the shot to record the eventual game-winning goal.
As has been customary this season for the Wild, they outshot, outplayed and had more scoring chances than their opponent. Yet they have nothing to show for it.
Zach Parise got the scoring started at the 4:05 mark of the first period by re-directing a terrific fake-shot, pass from Mikko Koivu into the open net behind Pekka Rinne. Ryan Suter started the power play tally with a cross ice pass to Koivu.
The Wild (0-1-2) cut the deficit to one with a power play goal from Jared Spurgeon. The defenseman took a pass in the slot from Nino Niederreiter and fired a shot against the grain that beat Rinne cleanly.
The Wild lost goaltender Niklas Backstrom just over the midway point of the opening period with a lower body injury. He will be re-evaluated in St. Paul on Wednesday. He sustained the injury on the breakaway that got Nystrom the penalty shot.
