Slow Food USA lobbies for real food in school lunch programs

Healthy food choices are important at school as well as home.

Slow Food USA is sponsoring a number of Time for Lunch events all over the country on Labor Day. On Monday, September 7th they will be holding Eat-in's to lobby for change in the school food served to our children.

There are 4 Eat-In events in Northern Jersey and one Eat-In in Princeton’s Maggie’s Park.

The Princeton Eat-In will start at noon and will be a potluck picnic. Bring a picnic blanket or lawn chair, a dish to share and drinks. Disposable plates and utensils will be provided, but, of course, bringing your own reusable ones is always a good idea. Contact Ritu Harrison for more information at rituharrison@gmail.com or 609-802-1923.

Signatures will be collected for the National Slow Food petition, as well as a local one to be sent to the Princeton Regional school board. The national petition says in part, “Change can’t wait: It's time to provide America's children with REAL FOOD at school.”

The goals of Time for Lunch:
•Invest in children’s health.
•Protect against food that puts children at risk, which includes stocking school vending machines with healthy items.
•Teach children healthy habits that will last through life.
•Give schools the incentive to buy local.
