Slow Food is a world wide organization that evolved from a protest at the Spanish Steps in Rome, Italy. People who believed in the quality of the food they grew prepared and ate were indignant that the Multinational Conglomerate dedicated to fast and cheep eats, McDonalds' would set up shop only a few feet away. The action brought focus to the fact that supersized does not necessarily mean super good.
While Alice Waters has been sounding this battle cry for years many people in our country are only now listening. The cause has been championed by President Obama who has stated that bringing nutrition back to our nation's schools is a priority to him.
Slow Food USA is promoting a national Eat-In potluck at public locations around the country. The purpose is to gather public support and send a message to congress that we need a mandate for real food in our schools, fruits and vegetables over corn syrup! The Eat - In's will be held this Labor day September 7th.
This month Congress will be reviewing The Child Nutrition Act which governs our struggling nations school lunch programs. Budget cuts in school systems will effect the food our children are served. This campaign seeks to shed light on the fact that our health as a nation starts with our children.
Locally there are two organized Eat-In's. One takes place at Project Sprout, the farm across from Monument Mountain High School Green Houses in Great Barrington. Project Sprout is a student far that helps to feed and educate students in the Berkshire Regional School District. The second Eat-In is in Amherst. They will have live music, fair trade coffee provided by local Roaster Dean's Beans. A cooking competition will make the most of local faire. If you can not attend an Eat-In consider visiting SlowFoodUSA.org to sign the petition which will be presented to congress.
