The Child Nutrition Act, a bill that governs the National School Lunch Program, is up for reauthorization in Congress, and Slow Food USA is running the “Time for Lunch” campaign, an effort to improve the country’s school lunch programs by offering healthier food choices. Since one in four children is overweight and one in three will get diabetes, those choices could do with some improving. On Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7th, people around the country are invited to gather at organized Eat-Ins, which celebrate eating as a social and political act.
Slow Food SF is hosting an Eat-In at the Civic Center Plaza, Larkin and McAllister, from noon to 3 pm. Speakers at the event will include Senator Mark Leno, a recent graduate of Balboa High School, Monica Guerra, and the author of The Jungle Effect, Daphne Miller, MD. There will be kids’ activities and the Magnolia Photobooth will be there. People will bring a dish to share ( just like a pot luck!) and a plate and utensils. The Eat-In is free, but people are asked to RSVP so organizers have some idea how many people they are organizing.
Sounds fun, right? Bring something delicious and have a great time.
