The official lineup for Mayhem Festival 2012 was announced this morning, and it will be co-headlined by metal giants Slipknot and Slayer.
Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor alluded to his band's headlining slot during his recent acoustic solo tour (read my review of that show here), but the addition of Slayer to the bill offers one hell of a crushing lineup for metal fans. Slipknot headlined the festival's inaugral tour in 2008, and Slayer shared top billing in '09, making this year's lineup a strong return to form after last year's more radio-friend headliners in Godsmack and Disturbed (read my review of Mayhem '11 here).
Anthrax will be headlining the second stage as well, offering half the Big 4 in the summer package. Distressingly, however, no New York City region dates have been announced as of yet, and the tour hasn't played NYC or Long Island since its first year. Like previous years, a Camden, NJ date will be played on July 27th, although the festival website lists it as a Philadelphia date.
A Hartford, CT date has been scheduled for Sunday, August 5th though, and the Comcast Theatre, about 2 hours from the 5 boroughs, has proven to be a reasonable weekend destination these past few years.
While a proper NYC date is unlikely, this morning's press release promises "A very special guest to be announced on March 5, 2012." Other Mayhem bands listed today include As I Lay Dying, The Devil Wears Prada, and Asking Alexandria. Tickets go on sale in early April.
