See a slideshow of photos of Haiti earthquake damage. A massive earthquake hit near Port-au-Prince, Haiti on January 12, 2010. Tuesday, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit 10 miles west of Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital at 4:53 pm. The damage has been devastating to the entire country. USGS geophysicist Kristin Marano called it the strongest earthquake to hit there since 1770.
Haiti has 9 million people and is a mostly desperately poor country, and in 2008 the mayor of Port-au-Prince stated that about 60% of the buildings there were built poorly and were unsafe in normal circumstances. The death toll currently unknown because many bodies have still not be found, but it is estimated to be in the thousands.
The ‘net buzz on this story is popular Wednesday because the earthquake happened yesterday and devastated most of the country of Haiti. People around the world want to see the damage, and help in any way that they can. See the slideshow of photos below.
