The gunman who was holding hostages in the Discovery Channel headquarters in the Washington, DC suburb of Silver Spring, Maryland has been fatally wounded by police, according to recent reports.
None of the hostages were harmed in the ruckus, authorities report.
According to ABC News, a SWAT team was called to communicate with the man -- believed to be James Lee -- who had two boxes and two backpacks, which police suspected may have contained explosives. Witnesses said they heard shots fired at about 1 p.m. ET.
Lee, 43, reportedly had problems with Discovery and had been arrested in 2008 by Montgomery County Police after conducting a protest against the cable channel. He also created a Web site on which he posted a manifesto instructing the Discovery Channel on what it should do to "save the planet."
Lee was shot by tactical units after pointing a handgun at one of the hostages. He died as a result.
Police are now analyzing the four items Lee had to determine whether what they are and if they’re explosive devices.
