Looking for a way to give back this Thanksgiving? Food and Friends' Slice of Life program makes it easy. Now in its fourth year, Slice of Life is a large-scale bake sale, where supporters buy Thanksgiving pies and proceeds are used to buy groceries and meals for Food and Friends' clients. In 2009, Washingtonians bought nearly 5,000 pies, and the goal for 2010 is 6,000. Even more incredible than the number of pies sold is the outcome of the sale. Each pie that is sold will provide one full day of meals for a neighbor in need.
Food and Friends is a DC-based nonprofit founded in 1988, and it is the only organization in the National Capital Region providing home-delivered meals and groceries to people living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-challenging illnesses. Along with nutrition counseling, Food and Friends packages and delivers these meals and groceries to more than 1,400 people in DC, Maryland, and Virginia.
Supporting this cause is as easy as going to the Slice of Life website and buying a pie, but hurry -- sales end this Thursday, November 18th. Baked goods for the event are made by Sweet Lilly's Heavenly Desserts and are specially priced for this event. Pies, which go for $25, come in four delicious flavors: Picture Perfect Pumpkin Pie, Harvest Apple Crumb Pie, Oh So Sweet Potato Pie, and Southern Pecan Pie, and the sale includes a Creamy Chocolate Covered Cheesecake, which is available for $40. Sweetening the deal, those people who buy the cheesecake are entered entered into the Slice of Life drawing for the chance to win a $1,200 US Airways giftcard.
When you buy your pies, you'll be prompted to select a pickup location. Food and Friends volunteers will be distributing pies at over 20 pickup locations in the DC metro area, and pickup is on Tuesday, November 23rd from 11 am to 8 pm.
Whether it's for yourself, for a friend, a party, or a Food and Friends client, consider buying a pie and supporting Food and Friends. 'Tis the season for giving, and what's a better gift than a pie?
