Most calories in wine are from the alcohol
At dinner last night, the conversation turned to wine. One of my friends was all excited by Slender wine: which she was referring to as no calorie. I quickly asked if it was alcohol free which she answered “no, but it doesn’t have any sugar, it uses a zero calorie natural sweetener so it‘s calorie free” It took 3 of us to convince her that most of the calories in wine come from the alcohol. I don’t know if she was more upset on how Slender wine was being advertised as a “diet” no calorie wine or that she hadn’t really found a no calorie wine!
She did however peak my interest and when I looked it up, there are multiple blogs and articles that refer to Slender as calorie free. It is easy to see how people will get the impression the wine is truly calorie free. Here are the first just 3 articles I found on Slender wine, all of which refer to it as containing no calories:
The skinny on new diet wine at the Oscars
Slender Wine offers no sugar and no calories
No-calorie wine among Oscar gifts
Truth is the main calories in wine ARE from the alcohol. A dry wine containing 15 percent alcohol will have approximately 150 calories per five ounces. So, while sugar (1 gram =4 calories) will add calories, the majority always comes from the alcohol itself.
The Chateau Thomas Winery website keeps quiet about the calorie content of their Slender wine. They do not state it is calorie free, instead they promote the fact it is naturally sweetened. It advertises Slender Wine as:
No Sugar
No Carbs
No Fats
No After-taste
No Kidding!
I will agree it is a better choice for people who need (or want) to cut sugar out of their diet, but I wish they made it more clear that only the sweetener is calorie free: not the wine. And it would be nice if before articles write it up as calorie free they might check out that little fact first! They got my friend all excited thinking there really was a zero calorie wine!

Oh if it were only true - a no calorie wine! I checked the links and they are all calling it no-calorie I would fall for it too.
Thanks for the article. PT Barnum has been proved right again. I couldn't believe this was the only article I could find on the web that wasn't a misinterpreted regurgitation of the winery's sly marketing ploy.
I agree with Chris, I believe you are the only one that has actually stated the truth and not just copied what was written!
I think you mean "pique," not "peak." But anyway, it's quite sad that a supposedly educated woman (your friend) needed three people to convince her that alcohol had calories. Where was she during science class in high school???
Oh Luke you have to remember all woman want a non-calorie wine and I'm sure this friend is like all my friends and educated or not, they just want to believe and it would take an Army to convice us otherwise!
Personally, I was day dreaming about getting out of Science class and if someone told me there was a no calorie wine I'd jump on it without figuring out this was impossible. And I have 38 employees under me that turn to me for help five days a week. And looking at how all the other links refer to it as zero calories - they too mis-understood. In fact, I was a bit sad to read this article that pointed out the truth :-(
actually if you guys really read what my brichure reads it clearly states that slender contains Zerose which contains no calories it does not say no calorie wine
I bought the wine after seeing it at a liquor store with a advertisement saying it is zero calorie. The way the advertisement was written you could either interpret it as the wine is calorie free or Zerose is calorie free. I bought it to try knowing it couldn't be calorie free because of the alcohol, however I do think they should have to be more clear in their advertising because a lot of people will be mislead.
They advertise 0 calories in the sweetner, not the actual wine itself.
Has anyone tasted the wine?
I'm born and raised in Napa, a winemaker, and working on low calorie wines. Yes, the first thing I did after reading calorie free was look to see if it had alcohol. Yup, 12%. That's approx 120 calorie glass. But I am excited about this launch because it shows me there is a market for my wine! I have been experimenting for three years to create a HALF CALORIE wine, which I call DEMI wine. Half the calories, (because) half the alcohol. All the flavor. A dry white cuvee, with floral and fruity aromas, full mouth feel with white peach and apricot essence, and a smooth finish. I haven't bottled yet, May 5!!! is the date. But check into my website to buy it after it's bottled. www.BexofNapa.com or send me your comments BexofNapa@gmail.com
