Santa's elves at the Sleigh Riders Motorcycle Toy Run - photo by Abby Clabough
With sub-zero temps and snow a week before the run, and colder weather with more snow two days following the run, it was wonderful that Charley Barnes, the participants, and the recipients of this year's Sleigh Riders Motorcycle Toy Run were graced with amazing weather on Sunday.
The riders met at Centennial Park in Greeley as temps were reaching the mid-forties. Full Throttle Coffee House was providing coffee and hot chocolate, but by the time I got there, they were out. Riding in a cold December will rapidly deplete coffee supplies.
Just in front of me, two Greeley police officers, enlisted to lead the group, rolled in on their bikes. T-shirts were handed out, friends gathered, and soon we got word on how we were going to proceed.
Both Greeley and Weld County law enforcement did an incredible job of holding traffic at intersections while we wound our way down 23rd Avenue to 10th Street, and then up 10th to Rafferty's for an Italian buffet and music. The best part of the ride was the people of Greeley who pulled over to watch us ride by, waved to us, and were courteous while we halted their progress on a busy shopping day before Christmas.
I haven't heard the stats from the run: number of bikes, toys gathered, or money raised, but look at the slide show and you can get an idea of participation. I'd say it was a huge success!
