Sleepy Heads have been sweating it out over a long hiatus wondering how Ichabod and Katrina Crane, Abbie and Jenny Mills, and Captain Frank Irving will get out of their respective predicaments. Now we finally have our first official teaser for Season 2, which features footage from the premiere episode, “Hellfire.” Watch the embedded video and let’s dissect the very short, but sweet footage.
Here’s what we already know: War isn’t coming, he’s been in Sleepy Hollow all along! Now John Noble’s Henry Parrish/Jeremy Crane/War/ Moloch’s faithful servant is sticking around to make sure he follows through on what he started. He imprisoned Ichabod in a pine box and handed Katrina over to the Headless Horseman/Death/Ichabod’s former BFF Abraham. This bitter act of betrayal exacted Jeremy’s revenge on his parents and propelled Moloch’s apocalyptic plans into motion. So now what?
The teaser confirms that Ichabod and Abbie are back in action, which is a relief. It will be interesting to see how much the show runners will reveal. Will there be flashbacks throughout the course of the season showing how Ichabod and Abbie struggled to get out? Or will the premiere give us a loaded snapshot of how Ichabod and Abbie break free, so they can quickly get back to the business of saving the world and move on to new supernatural adventures?
During the Television Critics Associations summer press tour, ‘Sleepy Hollow’ creators, Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Len Wiseman, EPs Mark Goffman, Heather Kadin, and series stars, Tom Mison, Nicole Beharie, and John Noble shared some teasers on Season 2.
Although the video shows Ichabod and Abbie back in action, Kurtzman says that getting out of that pine box will not be an easy task for Crane. Kurtzman & Co. don’t reveal when Crane gets out of the box, they only tease that it is going to take some time. However, they did discuss some of the villains that will try to raise hell in Season 2.
First of all, they clarify that dealing with Henry/War is going to be tricky. HitFix provides a telling highlight from the TCA panel in which Orci teases:
War can tear not only a town apart but a family apart. This is about Katrina and Crane and the potential conflict of, 'Can they redeem their son or not?' And how does Abbie deal with knowing [Ichabod's son is evil] ... sometimes you have to go at evil the hard way."
It sounds like Henry will continue to get under our skin as he manipulatively carries out Moloch’s plans. I’m very curious to see how Ichabod, Katrina and Abbie interact with Henry when they meet again. Their son has literally unleashed Hell upon his parents, so it will be a frighteningly awkward reunion to say the least. But have the Crane’s lost all hope in their troubled son? Will the Crane’s be able to appeal to any shred of humanity that may be left in their wicked son? Will Abbie act as a voice of reason if the Cranes think they could still redeem their son in some miraculous way? Noble’s character surpasses your average TV show villain. He is very complex, layered, and dangerous. Then again, many of ‘Sleepy Hollow’s’ “monsters of the week” have proven to play a greater role than just being bad, which why we can expect to see more of them.
‘Sleepy Hollow’ promises to provide new twists on classic creepy creatures, including a wendigo (SuperSleepy!), a succubus, the Kindred (which is conjured from the Headless Horseman’s skull), and the Pied Piper. Tom Mison Fans has posted very stunning illustrations of the Pied Piper, the Kindred and a beefed up Moloch, which appear to be from the upcoming Comic-Con 2014 preview issue of Entertainment Weekly magazine (view the images here.)
The showrunners promise to put a unique ‘Sleepy Hollow’ stamp on these supernatural foes and they explain the importance of introducing these new baddies to the series. HitFix reports:
"It's about making sure the characters come in a manifestation of a problem our characters are going through," Kurtzman adds. "We hope that way the characters are resonant."
As we discovered in Season 1, many of the supernatural cases tested Ichabod and Abbie, revealing the depths of their individual character, while also strengthening their bond as Witnesses. They also provided a fascinating link to their pasts and illuminated important aspects of their history. During those trials and revelations, Ichabod and Abbie also learned who they can trust. Some people truly had their backs and lent a helping hand in their fight against evil, while others secretly served Moloch. When new faces pop up in Sleepy Hollow, the gang will need to figure out exactly who they can trust.
With Frank Irving in jail, Sleepy Hollow has a new sheriff in town. At first we assumed that she would not be understanding of Abbie’s unorthodox methods, but another TCA teaser implies that there is more to Sheriff Lena Reyes that meets the eye. TVLine elaborates:
Added Goffman, “We have a new sheriff in town, Lena Reyes, and I think that’s going to pose a lot of cool conflict for Crane and Abbie as they try to work their way in the precinct, as they did with Irving. She has a history in Sleepy Hollow, but has been with the border patrol for a while, so she’s really no-nonsense and a real obstacle.” (Executive producer Heather Kadin noted that Lena will also have a mysterious connection to Jenny and Abbie.)
Did Sheriff Reyes have a history with the Mills’ mother? Maybe they grew up together in Sleepy Hollow or even attended the same church. Could Reyes have known or even worked with Sheriff Corbin? Perhaps he reached out to her as a trusted cop during his investigation into the supernatural. Earlier this summer TVGuide shared some scoop which could possibly relate to Reyes:
I hear there are several new characters the producers aren't revealing in advance of Season 2 in order to maintain some element of surprise. But we were able to squeeze the following hints out of executive producer Mark Goffman: "We're going to be digging into Abbie's past a lot more and getting to know more about her family and her heritage, which is a big part of the show this season. We're also going to be filling out the town even more, so we'll get to see what the people of Sleepy Hollow are like."
It is possible that Reyes may help shed more light on Abbie’s past. Whatever the mystery may be, I have a feeling Reyes’ arrival in Sleepy Hollow and her connection to the Mills sisters isn’t a coincidence. Let’s just hope she can be trusted.
Other new faces in Sleepy Hollow include a couple of strapping young bachelors, one of whom may make Ichabod a little jealous when he cozies up to Abbie.
We’ve been learning a lot about bounty hunter/antiques dealer Nick Hawley who will be sticking around for a little while. If you’ve been following ‘Sleepy Hollow’ on Twitter and Instagram, then you’ve seen some of the Q & A videos with Matt Barr as he answered fans’ questions from the set in June. In one of the videos Barr describes Hawley as “brash, stubborn, cocky, self-absorbed…but at the end of the day he is a gentleman.” Suffice it to say that Hawley sounds like a piece of work and I’m sure he won’t shy away from confronting Crane. I get the feeling that Ichabod’s protective instincts for Abbie may surface if Hawley starts crossing any lines. But wait, Hawley isn’t the only new guy in town who is in fighting shape.
I’ve got nothing new on the premiere. But if you want to look a-head to Episode 6, I can tell you that there’s a new hunk in town – the late Sheriff Corbin’s son Joe, a well-built, all-American Marine carrying a big chip on his shoulder.
Well, I’m officially intrigued! I think Jake McLaughlin from NBC’s ‘Believe’ would be perfect. He definitely proved his acting chops on the short-lived drama. A character like this seems like a natural fit given McLaughlin’s filmography and personal experiences serving in the Army. Who would you dream cast in the role? Do you think Joe knows about his father’s investigation into the supernatural? Will he help or hinder Abbie’s work?
Joe isn’t the only troubled blast from the past in Season 2. ‘TURN’s’ Heather Lind has been cast as Mary Wells, a former flame who could complicate matters for Ichabod and Katrina. TVLine reports:
While at first pleasant and sweet, Mary has a darker side — and will prove to be flighty, moody and prone to fits of extreme jealousy.
Uh-oh! Will we see her solely in flashbacks or will Ichabod’s ex return to haunt him in the present? Is she a witch like Katrina? Has her spirit returned for revenge? Whatever the case may be, this doesn’t sound good for Ichabod and Katrina. Do you have any predictions?
This is only the beginning, Sleepy Heads. There will plenty of goodies revealed shortly during ‘Sleepy Hollow’s’ panel at the San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, July 25.
