"Sleeping With The Devil" is a movie based on the true story of Barbara Piotrowski and Richard Minns. The movie came to television in 1997 starring Shannen Doherty, Tim Matheson and Bonnie Bartlett. It is directed by William A. Graham and is based on the book by Suzanne Finstad. In the film the real names were changed to Dick Strang and Rebecca Dubrovich.

The fact-based drama tells the story of Rebecca Dubrovich, a beautiful woman who meets a handsome health club owner while skiing in Colorado. But, when the relationship becomes abusive, Rebecca ends it which leads to a brutal attack by her former boyfriend, Dick. Rebecca is determined to rebuild her life after the savage attack. The problem is her ex-boyfriend is still stalking her.
The true story on which the movie is based made headlines in 1980,when a woman was shot four times by her ex-boyfriend. According to Barbara Piotrowski, Richard Minns hired someone to shoot her in a parking lot in Texas after she ended their relationship. The injuries she sustained were so severe that she was bound to a wheelchair for a time. She later changed her named to Janni Smith.
Richard Minns' case was featured on "Unsolved Mysteries." After living a life on the run, Richard Minns was eventually captured and placed in prison for fraud in 1994, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Minns was never convicted for the crime against Barbara Piotrowski.
