One of the mantra’s of green living is “leave nothing behind.” It implies becoming one with the earth around you, and when you vacate a place, no trace of your visit will be left. The practicality of this philosophy may be difficult to achieve but steps in sustainability are available, even for leisure. If you are an avid outdoor enthusiast, a minimalist, or someone who likes a new twist on living green, the Cocoon Tree Tent may be the product for you.
The Cocoon Tree Tent is a mobile tree house of sorts, a spherical tent that can travel with you and provide a whimsical form of shelter for your next camping trip or semi-permanent shelter. The Cocoon Tree Tent is one part tent, one part hammock, and it gently bounces in the breeze and rocks its inhabitants to sleep.
The Cocoon Tree is sold by a French company, and was created by Berni Du Payrat. It supports more than two tons above the ground. The spherical structure is made of aluminum and covered with a resistant canvas. . A second skin made of synthetic fiber looking like bamboo can be added. Designed to be hung from trees, it comes with a bed big enough to accommodate two adults and two children with room to spare. This "modern version of the treehouse," as described by the company, can be installed in just two hours (some models take 2 days, and the company can install it for you). It is tied with ropes and is secured by nets. Once ready, it is accessible via nets or wooden walkways.
The interior features a 2.4 meter circular bed with a custom sheet. The frame is constructed with a series of ribs that create the shape of the Cocoon sphere and hold the bed in place. Each rib has a hook for a rope or cable that can connect it to nearby trees just like a typical hammock but with more support.
The advantages are many. It can be located anywhere there are trees or other structures to secure it to. Rocky, sloping ground is not an issue, making any place your long term campsite. It is hung off the ground, so there is no threat of a damp floor, wet sleeping bag, or soggy belongings from an unforeseen storm. Floating in the air eliminates undesirable visitors such as ants, snakes, or other critters.
