Aaron Halon, Senior Development Director for Sledgehammer Games is confident their experience in storytelling will translate to a differential experience for gamers come release of the highly anticipated Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.
"I think through our ability to tell a great story, and with our history of telling really great narrative with games like Dead Space," Halon said, "I think we’ll really bring something great and different to the franchise that way".
Those unfamiliar with the team behind the narrative and Sledgehammer at large should know that Sledgehammer's founders, as well as a large corps of the staff are former Visceral employees, and many have extensive careers behind them in the gaming industry. Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey, founders of the studio, put out the well-received Dead Space in a collaboration, and look to carry that magic forward, and apply it to the aging formula of the Call of Duty franchise. Halon continued to describe that a longer development cycle most certainly will benefit the games narrative,
Also, we had a three-year development cycle, which was new for the franchise. It gave us much more time to develop the story, the gameplay and the graphics.
Activision revealed earlier this year that the franchise would shift to a 3-year 3-studio development cycle, allowing more time for each studio to craft and refine their titles. This move was generally well-received, and serves to allow gamers a better game, and the creators that oft-needed few extra months to polish and ensure the product is ready to go. Halon praised the cycle and its benefits further,
Everything is that much better because of [the three-year dev cycle]. It’s also the first time we’re truly developing on next-gen consoles, so all of those things that come with next-gen will help [Advanced Warfare] standout.
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare releases on November 4 for Xbox One, Playstation 4, Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC. PC and new-gen players can reserve the "Day Zero Edition" allowing them an extra day to play, as well as other perks.
