Salt Lake fashionistas put aside superstitions on Friday the 13th and came out to support the local Salt Lake fashion scene for Fashion Night Out. The event drew a wide array of interesting SLC characters from the glam boys, girls in heels, boys in bowties, and far too many leggings. Fashion Night Out featured local designers and retailers: Albert Chloe, Krista Nielson, Leone Collection, Peach, Nappi Clothing, Vintage Fox, JMR and Lollabella, as well as Urban Outfitters, the only non-local retailer. The event was a good first effort for the SLC scene and, hopefully, should the event continue, it will only get better with time. FNO resembled what LA fashion week began as – amateur and chaotic. Models and girls pretending to be models clumsily dancing down the runway, and a host who looked like a Merrill Lynch analyst in an out-of-place suit in a summer fabrication were distractions easily fixable next time. With three major talent and model agencies in Salt Lake City, there is no reason the stores and designers couldn’t have hired that talent and supported that local industry as well. The host role at a fashion show is a completely antiquated concept and really unnecessary. Whether it was their intention or not, the event seemed to focus more on the party aspect of the evening instead of the fashion aspect which again contributed to the amateur feeling. The retailers and designers presented decent collections although some left much to be desired. Albert Chloe and Urban Outfitters definitely had the strongest collection of merchandise that showed off what they have to offer. The other collections seemed very last minute and out of context. This is mid November and yet there where white booty shorts from one retailer and white denim pants from another. All criticisms aside, the event really was a good first step and something the SLC fashion scene needs. Hopefully the organizers and participants will step it up, take it a little more seriously so that the 2nd Annual Fashion Night Out will be a smash success.
