Slavoj iek in Liverpool, Andy Miah, 2008.
9. Inanimate Objects Returning the Gaze, from "The Perverts Guide to Cinema." This is an interesting portion of the film where iek adds psychoanalytic depth to staple Hitchcockian techniques, most notably characters glancing at inanimate objects which then glance back; Argobast ominously stared upon by the top of the stairway, Norman Bates and Sam receiving the stink eye from a close-shot toilet bowl pupil, etc.
And while a Hitchcock expert could tell you more about the devices themselves, iek explains how the devices are functional in Lacanian terms. Don't forget the poop jokes and references to toilet bowls erupting with blood curdling fecal matter such as blood and fecal matter.
10. Interview on Nitebeat. This video is very funny and brilliant. It's funny because the interviewer presents himself as thoroughly unequipped to deal with the man, and then brilliantly Slavoj breaks it down for him. At every turn, the Nitebeat guy responds with joy and amazement that despite his preconceived notions - he too can take pleasure in the work of philosophy.
iek: ...thus this apparent free choice conceals a much stronger order...
Nitebeat Guy: Wow, you're kind of like a Denis Leary but from Slovenia, I'm beginning to get into this.
Final Conclusion: I never thought I'd have this much fun talking about this kind of stuff!
