Slavoj iek in Liverpool, Andy Miah, 2008.
3. Cinema Reproducing the Cinematic Experience, "The Pervert's Guide to Cinema," 2006.
This film moment from "Possessed" (1931), may illustrate the previous point much more effectively, and what's more - the film itself seems to implement the bulk of conceptual heavy lifting.
While their are countless cinema within cinema examples, and I would say that this is more technically the theatrical within that of film, note the resemblance of the train window spacing to the likeness of the literal film stock.
The metaphor becomes most accentuated where the dancing couple moves through the multiple window frames of what we presume is a single car all to themselves. The quote at the end is exceptional though in this link it gets cut off early. The man at the end of the train says "Looking in?" "Wrong way, you get in and look out."
