A skyway accident in Manila, Philippines has killed at least 17 people, and injured several after a passenger bus drove off a suburban Manila skyway on Monday morning, and fell onto a moving van, according to a Dec. 16 Inquistr report. The drivers of both the van and the bus are among the injured reportedly removed to a local hospital.
The Associated Press reports that television footage showed police officers in the area around several bodies where the incident took place. Police Superintendent Elisabeth Velasquez explained that the bus crashed 32 meters below the skyway. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but Skyway Operations and Maintenance Corp. spokeswoman Ivy Vidal noted that the highway was wet from rain.
One witness who was driving on the same road at the time, said that she was doing about 50 mph on the dark and rainy road when the bus overtook her vehicle, and estimates the bus itself was traveling around 62 mph. “After a few meters, I saw the bus fall and I shouted, 'The bus fell, the bus fell'," Irene Sisperes, told DZMM radio.
The investigation is ongoing, and earlier reports that 21 people had died in the accident are incorrect. Superintendent Velasquez corrected earlier reports that 21 died and 20 others were injured, and attributed the inconsistencies to double counting.
