A skyway accident in Manila during rush hour on Monday instantly became a gruesome scene of carnage. A bus plunged off the skyway, leaving bodies strewn across the road. According to the CDC on Dec. 16, at least 17 people are dead with some of the morning news shows reporting more than 20 dead this morning. Many of the bus passengers were killed instantly in this horrific accident. A few dozen passengers were injured, many seriously.

The bus, which was full with passengers, veered of the Manila skyway and collided with a van. The driver of that van was killed on impact. The skyway is an elevated highway. It was raining at the time of the accident, but it is unknown if the weather contributed to the accident.

The driver of the bus is in critical condition and the driver of the van that was hit was killed instantly. One witness, who claimed the bus passed her going about 70 mph, said other than the bus going at a good clip, she didn’t see exactly what happen as it was dark at the time. When she came upon the accident she saw that “the bus fell” off the skyway and onto the road below.

A full investigation is on-going today. The driver, who is in the hospital, will be tested for drug and alcohol. The company that owns and operates the bus has grounded its entire fleet out of abundance of caution until it is deemed that there’s no problem across the fleet that could have caused this accident.
