The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was released on the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 on November 11, 2011 and despite having only a 2 month run, it could quite possibly be called the best game of 2011 hands down. The amount of hype surrounding it and the astounding player response could back up this claim. With so many Dragonborn running around helping the folk of Skyrim by slaying dragons and completing quests, the game plays similarly to an MMO. It's admitedly strange that Bethsheda did not take this route while constructing the game, but nevertheless, one can wonder what Skyrim would be like as an MMO game.
Gamers have taken matters into their own hands and have developed an online multiplayer modifciation for the PC version of the game only. It is important to note that this mod is still in its alpha stage and it is not perfect. There's not much animation present, but considering the fact that this game has been out for such a small amount of time, the mod is pretty impressive.
For those interested in trying out this new mod, be forewarned that you will be doing so at your own risk. The developer of the mod will not take responsibility for anything that goes wrong with your game so be sure to back up the config files associated with it so that any settings aren't completely lost.
Here are a list of detailed instructions on what to do next:
- Install the mod by extracting the .rar file into your Skyrim root folder (it should look something like C:/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/common/skyrim).
- Start the game via SkyrimOnline.exe, which will enable the mod and update it to the latest version. As of now, there is no authentication yet for usernames so feel free to enter whatever you wish.
- Press F3 to switch between the UI mode and game mode.
There's still much work to be done with this mod, but it is really cool to see other players logged into a server playing the game with you.
It will be interesting to see this mod once it enters the beta stage; possibly it will become more usable. Yes, there is hope for MMO fans, just don't count on Bethsheda to bring it.
