Activision announced the 2013 edition of the "Skylanders" franchise Tuesday with "Skylanders SWAP Force". The new PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS game will sport 16 new characters with swappable top and bottom halves that allow for 256 unique combinations.
"Skylanders SWAP Force" will arrive this fall with the 16 new characters whose body parts can be swapped plus 32 core "Skylanders" characters that includes 16 brand new characters. The remaining 16 will be new versions of fan favorite characters. There will also be 8 new LightCore characters released.
Each "SWAP Force" character has a top and bottom half that is held together by a magnet. Putting the different body parts together mixes and matches character's powers and moves to essentially create all new characters.
This feature is explained in game with the following plot.
In Skylanders SWAP Force, Portal Masters embark on an all-new adventure in the mysterious Cloudbreak Islands, home to a mystical volcano that erupts every hundred years to replenish the magic in Skylands. During an epic battle, a brave group of Skylanders were caught in the volcano's eruption, which blasted them apart and sent them to earth. But, the magic of the volcano gave these heroes a remarkable new power -- the ability to swap halves -- turning them into a special team known as the SWAP Force. Meanwhile, Kaos is back with a new evil plan. And now, Portal Masters everywhere must reassemble the SWAP Force -- in their original form or in new combinations -- and send them back to Cloudbreak to save Skylands!
"Skylanders SWAP Force" comes with a brand new Portal of Power that is required to play the game. That means that the portal from "Giants" and "Spyro's Adventure" cannot be used with "SWAP Force".
The game is being developed by Vicarious Visions with Toys for Bob, the studio behind the first two games, providing assistance. "Skylanders SWAP Force" is being developed with HD graphics from the start this time around.
