Activision revealed Skylanders Trap Team last month at a press event in New York City, where the publisher, alongside developer Toys for Bob and superstore Toys "R" Us, announced new Skylanders, "traptanium crystals" and a redesigned portal.

Up until now, the portal developed for the original entry in the franchise has been compatible with later installments, however, in order to play this new addition players are required to purchase the redesigned portal unveiled at the event.

In an interview with Examiner, Executive Producer at Toys for Bob Paul Reiche says that "Because the portal is so essential to delivering this sense of capturing that's so important to the innovation, we really do require the use of this portal.

“We want to create and deliver things, whether it’s toys, software of hardware peripherals like the portal that make the experience better and provide a sense of super value. So like, a video game can be like [$50-60]. Us, well, our game for [$75], if you think about what comes in there beyond the software, there’s like that big Snapshot, crocodile archer, there’s Food Fight, the cute little artichoke guy, there’s two crystals [and] there’s the portal, a very sophisticated piece of electronics with lights and sound. There’s this cool collector trap tray where you can store your traps and it helps you understand what’s inside them. There’s tons of stuff in that box.

"So we believe that there’s really two ways for us to succeed: innovation every year -- never rest on our laurels -- and always provide a value to kids.”

Skylanders Trap Team releases October 5 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, Wii and 3DS.
