James Bond films have not always been well received by the Academy when it comes down to taking home Oscar. Despite a few nominations of the long standing fifty years, only two Academy Award wins had been added to the trophy case of James Bond. Out of the previous seven nominations prior to Skyfall, Norman Wanstall won for Best Effects, Sound Effects for Goldfinger. The second Oscar grab came for John Stears for Best Effects, Special Visual Effects for the work on Thunderball.
The 85th Academy Awards not only showcased a tribute of James Bond and Adele performing her top notch ‘Skyfall’ theme song, but the 23rd James Bond outing garnered a couple of Oscars. Skyfall had been up for five Academy Awards: Best Achievement in Sound Mixing, Best Achievement in Sound Mixing, Best Original Song, Best Film Score, and Best Achievementaward. The first Oscar win came as a tie with Zero Dark Thirty in the Best Achievement in Sound Mixing category. This win had been a pleasant surprise for the best James Bond film. Although the heavy hitter came soon after bringing home her first Oscar and the second, thus doubling the previous total for 007.
Adele not only belted out her stellar theme for Skyfall, but won her first Oscar. The victory came at truly no surprise as she had been the heavily favorite candidate heading into the ceremonies.
Congratulations to Adele and Skyfall for garnering great victories at the 85th Academy Awards!
