Skydiving Santa and pyrotechnics at downtown Longmont Lights event

See also

Once a year at Christmastime, Mile-Hi Skydiving group, based at Longmont's Vance Brand Airport, gets together with the big guy in the red suit. They strap pyrotechnics on him and, with a couple of his skydiving elves, he jumps out of a plane and lights up the skies over Longmont at night for the appropriately named Longmont Lights celebration being held this weekend in Longmont.

This isn't the first time Mile-Hi Skydiving has spread Christmas cheer from above. Most notably in 2007, Santa parachuted in during the daytime with a generous $10K donation for the city's ice rink to help keep it open. The donation came from the Blue Skies Foundation, which was established in memory of Jeff Sands, founder of Mile-Hi Skydiving Center. The foundation continues supporting the Longmont community in Jeff's memory, with support from fees paid from the MHS jump community.

Longmont Lights is a two night event being held this weekend, beginning Friday Dec 13th from 5-8pm at Roosevelt Park (map), with the Mile-Hi Skydiving pyrotechnics display at 7:30pm.

The following night, Saturday, Dec 14th, Longmont Lights concludes with the annual parade on Main Street on Saturday night, with fireworks following.
