I think we can agree that Albuquerque is a city with plenty of outdoor opportunities. We can bike the bosque trails, hike in the Sandia foothills, explore the petroglyphs on the west side, climb the LaLuz trail all the way to the top of the mountain, kayak the Rio Grande (sometimes), run the Duke City Marathon, play tennis at one of the many public courts or hit the links at some of the finest golf courses in the country.
But, maybe you're an adreneline junkie and want to take it one step further. Well, you could go jump out of an airplane (hopefully you'll remember to use a parachute) or you could wait until the state fair rolls into town and climb into one of the bungee-jumping rigs and bounce around a bit. Personally, I don't recommend either of those.
I do have fond memories of a trip to North Carolina, however, where I spent a couple of hours at a hang-gliding school. Now that was fun and relatively safe. The famous Outer Banks has some fantastic sand dunes and they're a great place for some airborne fun. If you don't believe me just ask Wilbur & Orville.
If you think that's a bit of long haul there's an excellent opportunity available right now right here in Albuquerque. You can sign up for a tandem paragliding flight where you'll be paired with an instructor/guide who'll fly right along with you. First, of all, though you'll have to be at least 18 years old. Next, you'll have to weigh between 100 and 220 pounds.
The Rapture Air Paragliding School is making this half-price offer available on weekends so you will want to check it out right away. The offer is only available for a couple of days, but you have 6 or 7 months to use it. That should give you time to get up your nerve to take the leap. If you decide to chicken out you can always give it to your best friend as a birthday gift.
Don't worry, it's really not scary at all - try it, you'll like it!
