In Connecticut, one never knows what animal may appear in the backyard on a summer night.
Animal interactions are always interesting to witness: here is a quick story from last summer:
At dusk, the neighborhood skunk patrols the lawn for a meal. His quest often leads him underneath the rabbit cage, where worms and grubs are abundant. The soil is rich here, from the rabbit’s scat and hay
The skunk is so occupied on rooting for food, that he doesn’t even notice the rabbit above.
The rabbit, on the other hand, is totally focused on the visitor outside its cage.
Although a rabbit is prey for many carnivores, one can be quite protective of its territory.
Our rabbit runs back and forth stomping its feet, and gnaws at the cage, as if trying to get outside to the skunk.
In the wild, skunks do not hunt rabbits, but rather feed on small beetle larvae and worms under the soil.
Later during the night the skunk returns. Again patrolling the backyard. Of course his nose leads him back again for a midnight visit…..under the rabbit cage.
