I love when I get to meet someone amazing. Even better when they don't only meet my expectations, but exceed them. I was lucky enough to sit down with Nicole DeBoom, Founder of Skirt Sports and found an kindred spirit (I wish)!
Nicole's enthusiasm for life is abundant the moment she (and Chris, her PR partner) walk into the Caribou Coffee. It is apparent they do not need the coffee to keep themselves energized. Nicole is a new mom (her baby girl is a year old) but she has the energy most would pay dearly for.
Nicole shared with me how Skirt Sports started. She was a professional triathlete. She wanted to look cute and be inspired to get out the door. The public relations dream - and true kick off of the company was when she won the Wisconsin Triathalon in her skirt.
In business, Nicole says she uses the "aid station" process. Where she takes each part of business one step at a time. She learned her business acumen by trusting her gut ("what we like goes") and a personal board of advisors. She has taken this thought of one step at a time and personal advisor and created the Kick Start Program (they are accepting applications for this year through March 25, 2013).
Skirt Sports has been finding ways to give back their "Runners High" (energy, motivation and thoughts) to women across the country. They have started a "Kick Start" program to partner new runners with seasoned runners to encourage, to help cross those barriers of entry (weight, financial, time management, etc), and give them tools for a life change that includes being active and women helping women to do their first 5K.
Skirt Sports is adamant that they find "real people" to try on their prototypes (they said that sometimes the just pick out someone from their gym to try on clothes!) so that the products (they sell skirts - duh!, sports bras, shorts, tops, jackets & accessories) fit the everyday person, not just a model. The thoughtful designs have pockets in places that make sense. There is even one that has a cleavage pocket - ladies I know I've seen you stash your lip-gloss in your bra before.
Skirt Sports also hosts several 5K's across the country as well as a 1/2 marathon in Denver. For more information visit their website at SkirtSports.com.
