Skip the Super Bowl at Chicago-area local yarn shops

What is a knitter to do if he or she would like to avoid All Things Football on the day of the Big Game? Several local yarn shops are offering refuge from overpaid athletes, overpriced commercials, over-caloric food, and listening to spouses yell at their flat-screen televisions.

Out in Forest Park, Knit Nirvana is hosting a non-Super-Bowl party and sale to make room for their spring yarns. A generous selection of yarns will be 20-25% off of their original price, and the party will include snacks and refreshments. The party starts at 5p.m. and in addition to open knitting, the store will be open for customers to shop while they discuss anything unrelated to football. Knit Nirvana is located within walking distance of the Des Plaines Avenue Blue Line stop, and several Pace bus routes from Harlem Avenue, Madison Street, and Des Plaines Avenue.

Sifu Design Studio, in their new location in the Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago, is also hosting an anti-Super-Bowl party for any and all who would like to attend. An open invitation to BYOB and your favorite junk food to Sifu has been extended, with the promise of open-crafting night, and John Hughes-directed movies on the big screen instead of football. Sifu Design Studio is located near the intersections of Broadway and Glenlake Avenues, and is near both stops on the Broadway CTA bus and the Granville station on the Red Line.

Up in Winnetka, Stitch(es) is hosting a pre-Super-Bowl Sit 'n' Stitch, offering an open knit session from 1p.m. to 4p.m. and 15% off of yarn purchases during that time. Knitters and crocheters can ask a question or two about a current project they have, and then knit at home during the game armed with the knowledge needed to complete the project that had them stumped. Stitch(es) is located at 1054 Gage Street in Winnetka, and is accessible by both Pace bus and Metra, and there is plenty of street parking off of Green Bay Road.

Yarns to Dye For and More, located in Frankfort, is also hosting a sale and open knit and crochet session in honor of the Big Game. All superwash yarns are marked down 20% off of the regular price from 11a.m. to 3p.m., and knitters and crocheters are encouraged to bring in a project to sit and stay for the afternoon. Located in downtown Frankfort, there is plenty of street parking and restaurants near the store.

In its new location in Mount Prospect, Mosaic Yarn Studio is hosting a free Super Bowl Party (registration required). From 12p.m. to 2p.m. today, guests can throw a dart for a discount and enjoy pizza and refreshments. Located just off of the Metra line, there is also plenty of street parking near the store.

Any aversion to football and large-scale advertising can be avoided today with yarn and needles, and there are still good deals to be had even if you are rooting for your team. No matter where you are in the area, an avoidance of the largest spectator-sport event of the year can happen.
