LeBron James low carb weight loss explained: Ray Allen's Paleo diet motivated me

LeBron James is making headlines for his shocking weight loss on an extreme low carb diet, but has only lost 10 to 12 pounds, ESPN reporter Brian Windhorst said on an Aug. 6 podcast (listen above).

Windhorst, who has built a career reporting on LeBron, said the 6-foot-8 James lost weight on a very strict low-carb diet after entering the last NBA season in what he considered extremely bad shape.

"He's estimated at about 10 or 12 pounds down now," said Windhorst. "I guess he has cut out carbs."

According to Windhorst, LeBron is determined to start the 2014-15 NBA season with the Cleveland Cavaliers in much better shape in a bid to help his hometown clinch an NBA championship.

James is also reportedly self-conscious about his weight and was concerned because sports analysts repeatedly estimated his weight at 270 pounds. The 6-foot-8 LeBron weighed 250 pounds during his last season with the Miami Heat, according to official NBA statistics.

"He has actually been in the mid-260s and sometimes over 270 in his career," said Windhorst. "He doesn't like talking about it. I think they might list him at 250. He has been a little self-conscious about that in recent years."

LeBron Was Inspired By Ray Allen's Paleo Diet Transformation

While LeBron has not publicly commented on his dramatic weight loss or what type of diet he's following, rumors are swirling that he's following a low-carb Paleo or ketogenic diet.

Windhorst said LeBron was inspired by the dramatic transformation of his former Miami Heat teammate Ray Allen, who got super-fit after switching to the low-carb Paleo diet in the summer of 2013.

Allen, 39, came back from the summer break in significantly better shape than he was the previous year after adopting a low-carb, sugar-free Paleo diet. Ray promptly lost 10 pounds after going Paleo.

While weight loss was not Allen's goal when he embarked on the Paleo diet, he said the diet gave him better stamina and dramatically improved his post-workout recovery. Ray's health turnaround also motivated his Miami Heat teammate Dwayne Wade to adopt the low-carb Paleo diet.
