Since this year (2014) Cinco De Mayo lands on a Monday, Skinny Girl cocktails and Bethenny Frankel decided to have a fiesta in NYC on Tres (Three) De Mayo and begin the tradition of Skinny Cocktails and Cinco De Mayo. The party took place at La Cenita Steak in the meatpacking district in NYC. The Skinny Girl Cinco de Mayo had cocktails, sombreros, good music and Bethenny herself enjoying the festivities. Bevy Smith, Fredrik Eklund, comedian Michelle Buteau were among some of the stars in attendance.

Bethenny Frankel is a remarkable story, from a crazy childhood, to studying to be a culinary cook, and stops in show business to ultimately landing a spot on the Apprentice with Martha Stewart and then on Bravo’s The Real Housewives of New York. But nothing can come close to the deal she struck with Fortune Brands' Beam Global for an estimated $100 million for her Skinny Girl Cocktail. In our conversation, we discussed, her talk show, reality TV, and how she wants to OWN Cinco De Mayo…

Since this is the 1st annual Skinny Girl Cocktail Cinco de Mayo fiesta, how much longer would you like to keep this going?

Forever, I want to own this holiday. I would like to take possession of Cinco de Mayo (laughing).

How surprised are you with the success of Skinny Girl Cocktails?

I’m not surprised because it was a great idea and I had a lot of passion behind the idea. The simplest ideas are usually the most successful. I am surprised at the legs it’s had, and I’m so proud of the team and also grateful for the fans.

What made you get into spirits?

I wanted to have a signature cocktail I can trust, a drink that was slightly sweet and a little strong. I wanted a drink that wouldn’t give a hangover and made you feel sick the next day.

It’s all started with the Skinny Girl Margarita correct?

Yes, the margarita was the first low calorie ready to drink cocktail EVER. Plus I chose to market to women in a business that targets men. Now we have vodka, wines, and over 20 different options, its crazy.

How do you choose what flavors come out next?

Some are driven by what’s hot in the market but mostly driven by what I think women want.

What’s the next flavor you guys are working on?

We are working on a Spicy Margarita drink that would probably be the next flavor.

Will you ever have options for men?

Men follow women no matter what, it happens all the time. If you see a man he’s looking at a girl’s ass and following her, so that’s what’s been happening with this, men love Skinny Girl.

What’s next for Bethenny Frankel?

In the realm of television, I don’t know, I really don’t want to do it. But for now it’s about my daughter and doing yoga. I also have a children’s book Cookie and Peanut coming out in September and another cocktail book. I’m also launching hummuses and salsas, plus the Skinny Girl nutritional bars are killing it nationwide in Target, also Skinny Girl sparklers are a massive launch, which is a non-alcoholic beverage.

Would you ever do reality TV again?

I never say never, but right now I am not interested in that….

Here are some recipes you can use next time you have some Skinny Girl:

Mexican Margarita, 5 parts Skinnygirl® Sweet’arita, handful of frozen grapes, sugar or splenda for rim and lime garnish (optional). Preparation: Coat the rim of a margarita glass with sugar. Pour Skinnygirl® Sweet’arita over frozen grapes and garnish with a lime (optional).

Margarita de Celebracion, 5 parts Skinnygirl® Margarita, sliced jalapenos, muddled, lime wedge for garnish, and salt for rim. Preparation: Salt the rim of margarita glass. Pour Skinnygirl® Margarita over ice and add muddled jalapenos. Garnish with lime wedge and enjoy!
