Assemblymember Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley) of the California 15th Assembly District, issued a statement today backing President Barack Obama on his gun control proposals.
The President outlined proposals to ban military-style assault weapons, expand background checks and place limits on high-capacity ammunition magazines.
“I applaud President Obama for presenting a comprehensive plan that will help reduce the gun violence ravaging our communities and, hopefully, stop the rash of mass shootings that have become an all-too-common occurrence," she said.
"California has tough gun laws but our ability to address gun violence is undermined when one can bypass California rules by crossing state lines. Federal action is needed to ensure the effectiveness of our state laws.
"As public opinion shows, strong support for gun control exists nationally in favor of enforcement and regulations to bulletproof our communities from devastating gun violence.”
Earlier this month, Skinner introduced state legislation that would ban high capacity ammunition clips and restrict the sale of ammunition similar to the way gun sales are restricted in California.
