Skin Fin, Alive And Well In Lake Powell

I have recently received two reports of a rather large creature swimming in Lake Powell.  The sightings were on 31 July, and 1 August 2011.  The first sighting was from two witnesses, and the second sighting was witnessed by five people.  The sightings took place near Lone Rock.  The water was very calm, and no boats were in the area.

The first sighting was reported by two people who were fishing in the area of Lone Rock.  They stated they could see two humps as it swam past them.  The water was perfectly still, and there were no other boats in the area.  The sighting took place at 6:20 am on 31 July.

On 1 August at 7:27 am, the creature was sighted again.  Witnesses described it as swimming about ten miles per hour through calm waters near Lone Rock again.  One canoe enthusiast reported seeing bubbles as the creature swam past him.   One witness reports the creature being estimated at fifty feet long.  It does not slither through the water like a snake, but the back seems to break the surface from time to time.  It displaces the water in a “V” shape. The skin looked smooth and had no scales.  No fins were showing.  The event was recorded on an I-pod.  We hope to obtain a copy for further analysis.

Skin Fin is Arizona’s sea serpent and has been spotted in Lake Powell and various deep areas of the Colorado River.   See previous article at Skin Fin: The sea monster of Lake Powell

The most well known encounter happened in August 1958 when Erick Padgett was attacked by such a creature. He was rescued by his father in the nick of time. Several other fishermen joined the Padgett party and spent the rest of the day chasing the creature. They were never able to catch it, but a strange creature’s corpse washed up on shore a couple of months later.

There was great debate over the species of the creature or whether it existed at all.  However, the Smithsonian declared the corpse to be a black tip shark indigenous to the Gulf of California.  However,   Padgett said,“It had lungs. It was a mammal.”  Unfortunately, the corpse was lost and could not be re-verified.
