Skin care advice to help minimize rosacea flare-ups

Minimizing rosacea flare-ups can be a daunting task for sufferers of the skin disease, however the following skin care advice from top dermatologists will help in managing this unsightly skin condition.

Rosacea is a skin disease, which causes redness and pimples on the nose, cheeks, chin and forehead commonly referred to as “adult acne” that comes and goes. The triggers of this skin condition vary from one individual to the next; however keeping a food and beverage journal can identify specific aggravators, according to Dr. Zoe D. Draelos, consulting professor at Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, North Carolina.

Foods and drinks are common culprits of rosacea flares, specifically spicy foods, hot drinks, and anything that contains caffeine and red wine. Keeping a journal of what you eat and drink and when your rosacea flares can help you discover which foods and beverages may aggravate your rosacea. Since rosacea may be more easily treated when diagnosed early, make an appointment to see a board-certified dermatologist as soon as you first start noticing changes in your skin.

Dr. Draelos also offers the following skin care advice to help manage rosacea.

  • Don’t overheat as high temperatures can aggravate rosacea.
  • Protect the face from wind and cold with a scarf NOT made of wool or rough fabric that may irritate the skin further.
  • Use a sunscreen with at least an SPF of 30 or higher when outdoors that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.
  • Care for the skin and avoid excess rubbing, scrubbing or massaging and prevent hairspray from getting on the face.
  • Keep a simple skin care routine with a limited amount of products.
